Chocolate Crown of Thorns

First, can I say this is in no way a project / craft to 'minimize' the pain and agony Jesus suffered for you and I on the cross. Let's face it...Jesus was not just killed...he was slaughtered, beaten, kicked, crushed and crucified. THIS reality is far more important for our children to understand in order to truly appreciate His sacrifice. And, there are ways to help our children grasp the awesomeness of His love through fun edible treats. This is one of them.

The Chocolate Crown of Thorns.

This tasty 'teachable moment' is so easy to make but if taught with the proper Biblical truths, I promise your children will not soon forget it's impact.

All you need is:

-about 1/2 cup of chocolate chips (Baker’s chocolate works, too)

-a few handfuls of pretzel sticks,

-small mixing bowl and spatula,

-parchment paper or Silpat baking mat.

STEP 1) Gently melt the chocolate until it is able to be stirred. (either in the microwave or double boiler)

STEP 2) Once the chocolate is melted, throw in the pretzels, stirring slowly so as to not break the sticks.

Warning: This is going to get messy.

NOTE: Don’t worry about trying to coat every part of the pretzel, a little bit of brown poking through will help make the Crown’s appearance rustic.

STEP 3) Line your cookie sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil OR use your Silpat baking mat; Take one coated pretzel stick out from the chocolate at a time.

STEP 4) Lay each stick down, forming a circle. Overlap the sticks at sharp angles to help form the Crown of Thorns. Keep building and adding pretzels until you reach the desired look for your Crown.

Let it sit to allow the chocolate to harden.

Your Chocolate Crown of Thorns is done! A perfect treat for Good Friday OR add some easter egg candies as a nest for Easter Sunday.

Thank you, Father God, for sending us your son. For washing us clean in His blood. For your forgiveness. We love you! AMEN!
