Whatsoever You Do For The Least Of These

In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it’s not uncommon to pop into a fast food restaurant. Most of the time it’s a cheap and convenient way to grab a bite to eat. So, it’s easy to overlook what a blessing these quick meals are. We often forget that there are many who cannot afford such a luxury.

Carmen was grabbing a late night meal with her boyfriend at a popular fast food chain in California, Raising Cane's, when she was reminded of this blessing.

While eating her meal, Carmen couldn’t help but notice a homeless woman who entered and began quietly asking patrons if she could have their leftovers. As if this wasn’t heartbreaking enough, Carmen was shocked as everyone the woman approached denied her request, and instead threw their leftovers in the trash.

Carmen knew this woman deserved far better. And she’s sharing what she did next so that others might be inspired to show the same type of love and compassion.

When the homeless woman approached Carmen about her leftovers, the young woman gladly turned them over.

But as the grateful woman sat down to eat the one chicken strip and small handful of fries -- all that was left in Carmen’s box -- she knew this wasn’t enough. And so, she went to the counter, ordering the homeless woman a full, fresh meal, which she presented to her just as she was preparing to leave the restaurant.

After an evening full of rejection and disgusted looks, Carmen’s act of kindness overwhelmed the homeless woman, who burst into tears of gratitude.

“The look on her face said it all...I have never felt something like this...pure, real gratitude. That hug she gave me was like a hug I had never felt....those tears she shed were felt deep in my heart...I held her tight and let her let it out. I wasn't repulsed by it....I just held her. And that is a moment I will never ever forget,” Carmen said in her Facebook post.

The heartfelt embrace proves that it is truly better to give than to receive. And showing just a bit of compassion and humanity can go a long way for someone who is less fortunate. Thank you, Carmen, for the beautiful reminder that God commanded that we love one another. As Jesus said in Matthew 25:40,

“Truly I say to you, because you did it to the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.”
